Birtle Bear’s Rescue
Where did the story come from?
Many, many years ago I worked as a Housemother in a Children’s Home, a large Victorian house which housed twenty children of mixed ages. One day we cleared some cupboards out and disposed of broken toys and old books. A ragged old teddy bear was one of the things that was thrown out. I rescued the bear and took him home, I cleaned and mended the bear and I still have him. That’s where the idea for the story originated.
Where did the name Birtle come from?
I wanted a unique and alliterative name for the title of the book. In my early childhood I had a great Grandmother called Jane Birtle {Granny Birtle} so using a family name met my requirements and works well.
